Frequently Asked Questions

Are Wild Fuschia Bakehouse Bread Mixes Easy To Make?

Yes, Wild Fuschia Bakehouse bread mixes are easy to make and all come with easy to follow instructions on the back of each pack and I even have “how to Videos” on our Youtube Channel. The simplest one is the Wheaten Bread so if you are new to baking and want to enjoy a great tasting bread that will give you some confidence, try it first.

We also offer a multipack so you can work your way through our range and build up your confidence with baking as you go. If you have any questions just send us a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible.

What Extra Ingredients Do I need to Make the Mixes?

The Wheaten Bread Requires, one egg and 220mls buttermilk or 160mls milk.

The Soda Bread requires 220mls buttermilk or 200mls milk.

The Stout Bread requires 10g butter, 65g treacle, 150mls milk and 50mls Stout.

The Scones require 60g butter, 1 egg and 100mls buttermilk.

How Long does it take to make the mixes

All the mixes are ready in under an hour and that should include the mixing and/or kneading.

What Temperature Do I use to Bake the Breads?

Wheaten bread is cooked at 180° for approximately 50-60 minutes.

Stout bread is baked at 180° for approximately 50 – 60 minutes.

Soda bread is baked at 150° for approximately 35-45 minutes.

Scones are baked at 190° for approximately 15-20 minutes.

Why is my bread not baking at the temperatures suggested on the back of the pack?

All ovens are a little different, so the temperatures on the back of the pack are guide temperatures. I used to have an oven that didn’t give an even bake so was a little paler on one side, so I used to turn the bread 15 minutes before the end to even it out. I also had an oven that ran 20° lower than it should and I just adjusted the temperature setting accordingly. If the breads aren’t baking on the guide temperatures just adjust according to your own oven, either up or down.

Why do some recipe books ask you to preheat your oven?

A hot oven means the cooking starts straight away trapping the air in your bread, making it lighter in texture and allowing the whole cooking process to get under way.

I normally heat my oven to 10° higher than the recipe asks for. Once I open the oven door to put my bread in, the temperature drops to the temperature I actually want. If you heat the oven to the temperature the recipe states it drops when you open the door and takes time to get to the correct temperature. Just be careful if you do this to change the temperature down once you have your bread in the oven.

How do I know my bread is cooked properly?

Take the bread out of the tin and tap the base of the bread. If the bread sounds hollow it is baked if not pop it back in for another 5-10 minutes and recheck.

Can I use Bread Mixes in my Bread Making Machine?

Yes, you can use the Wild Fuschia Bakehouse Irish Wheaten Bread Mix in a bread maker. Just make it up as directed on the back of the pack but take out the paddle in the bread maker as the bread doesn’t need to be kneaded. I use the wholemeal setting and it works really well.

Yes, you can use the Wild Fuschia Bakehouse Irish Stout Bread Mix in a bread Maker. Just make it up as directed on the back of the pack but take out the paddle in the bread maker as the bread doesn’t need to be kneaded. As it is a wet batter, I set the bread maker to a larger loaf 750g, rather than the 500g setting to give it a little bit longer to bake off the moisture.

I’m still working on the soda bread so please watch this spot for further information!

Why do the Bread Mix packs differ in weight?

Each bread has it’s own recipe, a recipe that has come from my bakery in Dunfanaghy which unfortunately is now closed due to the pandemic.

Each pack has up to 6 ingredients, all of which are weighed out and added to individual packs, to make our great tasting range of breads.

I have been asked why the Stout bread only has 235g in the pack? It contains a mixture of 6 ingredients all of which are weighed and added to the pack. This mix makes wetter batter/dough than the other breads and is rich and moist as a result. I did think about adding dried milk or substitutes for the stout, butter and treacle but decided against this as it would impair the flavour of the bread. Wild Fuschia’s aim, is to make “GREAT TASTING BREAD” and our Silver award in 2020 from Blas na hEireann recognises this commitment to quality and taste.

Can Vegans eat the Bread Mixes?

All the bread mixes are great with plant based alternative milks and margs, so are suitable for those on a vegan diet.

Substitute the egg with a teaspoon of good quality oil such as olive oil and just check the label on the stout to make sure it is vegan friendly; I believe Guinness and Yanaroddy by Kinnegar are both suitable.

All the bread mixes are great with plant based alternative milks and margs, so are suitable for vegans and those following a dairy free diet.

If you have an egg allergy or don’t wish to eat eggs then we suggest using a teaspoon of good quality oil such as olive oil instead of the egg.

We unfortunately don’t have any gluten free bread mixes available at the moment.
